Who are we?
This site is an initiative of Anna Simon, Joost PH Drenth, and Jos WM van der Meer, of the department of General Internal Medicine at the Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
In Nijmegen, there is an active group of researchers interested in HIDS. This interest dates back to the very beginning, in 1984, when Jos WM van der Meer et al. (then working in Leiden) first described this syndrome in the Lancet (PubMed ID 6144826). Joost Drenth got his PhD on hyper-IgD syndrome in 1996, while Anna Simon received that honour on November 4, 2004. Evelien Bodar and Jeroen van der Hilst joined our team in September 2003 as physician-scientists, working on their PhD. Also working with us on this research effect is Heleen de Koning, who is a medical student.
On a separate page, we list our publications on periodic fever syndromes, and significant events in that area for our reasearch group, in chronological order.
Nijmegen also houses the Nijmegen HIDS registry, a unique database which currently contains information on 203 HIDS patients. (Online patient entry form available)
Twice, Nijmegen has hosted an International workshop on HIDS. On these occasions, a small group of physicians and scientists with an interest in HIDS (and related periodic fever syndromes) convened to discuss the latest developments. On November 4, 2004, we hosted a more small-scale meeting on the occasion of 20 years of HIDS research and Anna Simon's PhD ceremony.
In the last few years, there has twice been a meeting of (Dutch) HIDS patients. These meetings are meant keep patients updated on the latest developments, but also especially to offer an opportunity for HIDS patients to meet each other. At the last meeting, in August 1999, four patients decided to form a HIDS patients platform. We have plans to organize a third national meeting of Dutch HIDS patients within the next few months.
